Root-end Surgery (Apicoectomy)

Why would I need endodontic surgery or root-end surgery?

Generally, a root canal is all that is needed to save a tooth with an inflammed or infected dental pulp. Occasionally, this non-surgical procedure will not be sufficient to heal an infected tooth, and Dr. Horalek may recommend root-end surgery. Persistent biofilm (bacterial infection) at or near the end of an infected tooth are the reason this procedure is sometimes necessary.

What is "root-end surgery" (apicoectomy)?

The video on the right illustrates this simple procedure. An incision is made in the gum tissue to expose the bone and surrounding inflamed tissue. The damaged tissue is removed along with the end of the infected root. A root-end filling is often placed to prevent reinfection of the root, and the gum (gingival flap) is sutured.  The bone heals naturally around an uninfected root, over a period of months, restoring full function.

Following the procedure, there may be some discomfort or slight swelling or bruising, while the incision heals.  To alleviate any discomfort, an appropriate pain medication will often be recommended. If you have pain that does not respond to medication, please call our office.
